  • Features which you can select with an "X" are yes/no (on/off) features. The default is "no" which is represented by empty [ ] brackets.

  • If you are asked to set an option with an * (asterisk), it means that you may select one of a number of choices.

  • <No Value Set> means that a particular option requires special text to change from the default setting.

Using Pine, the Mailer

To start up Pine from the UNIX system prompt, type pine. Pine's main menu -- a list of commands (all single-letter) -- will appear. Type the appropriate letter, or use the up- and down-arrow keys to highlight the command, and then press < Enter >.

Quick Instructions

  • To read new incoming mail: Type the letter i for the index of messages in your current folder. By default, when Pine starts up, the current folder is Inbox, the folder containing your new incoming messages. Use the arrow keys to highlight a message, and press < Enter > to open it.
  • To compose and send a message: Type the letter c. A blank message form will open. Type your entries on the message header lines (To, Cc, Subject), using the arrow keys to move among the header lines and into the Message Text area. Here, you will be using Pine's Composer -- which is a version of the editor Pico -- to compose and edit your message. (Entering an email address at the Cc line sends a copy of the message to that address.)

Pine's internal help and the command lists it displays at the bottom of the screen are context-sensitive. So, for example, to get help with editing the text of your message, and to have the editing commands displayed at the bottom of the screen, you must actually have placed the cursor in the Message Text area.

Selected Pine Commands

You may enter these commands in upper or lower case. Additional information is available from Pine's internal help.
