Securing ActiveX Settings in Internet Explorer

The following steps show you how to disable or restrict the ActiveX controls in Internet Explorer (versions 5.01, 5.5 and 6), as recommended by Secunia - Security and Virus Information website, which ranked this exploit as Extremely critical.

  1. Launch Internet Explorer

  2. Click on Tools then select Internet Options...

  3. Click on the Security tab

  4. Under the heading Select a Web content zone to specify its security
    settings
    make sure the Internet icon is selected. If necessary, left
    click on it once to select it.

  5. Click on the Custom Level... button

  6. The Security Settings popup window will now appear, the first listing is ActiveX controls and plug-ins

  7. Make the following changes:

    1. Download signed ActiveX controls -> Prompt

    2. Download unsigned ActiveX controls -> Disable

    3. Initialize and script ActiveX controls not marked as safe -> Disable

    4. Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins -> Prompt

    5. Script ActiveX controls marked safe for scripting -> Prompt

    6. Click on OK

  8. Click on Yes when asked Are you sure you want to change the security
    settings for this zone?

  9. Click OK
